Kazakhstan removes Taliban from terror list

03.06.2024

Kazakhstan's President Qasim Cömert Tokayev, at a meeting with the heads of parliament of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CPS) countries, reported that his country removed the Taliban movement from the terror list.

According to the interfax agency, Tokayev stated that this was done on the basis of the importance of developing commercial and economic cooperation with modern Afghanistan and the understanding that this regime is a long-term factor.

Last week, Russian foreign and justice ministries offered President Vladimir Putin to remove the Taliban from the list of prohibited organizations.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in a statement on the same day, noted that the Taliban is the real power in Afghanistan, a country that Russia and especially its allies in Central Asia care about.

Later, Putin stated that the Taliban is currently controlling the territory of Afghanistan, so Moscow will establish relations based on today's realities.

The Taliban have been running Afghanistan since August 2021. The government established by the organization is not recognized by UN member countries, but many states, such as Russia, are in contact with the organization.
